We are a uniformed services activity centre offering a unique and exciting Duke of Edinburgh's Award Gold residential for 16+ year olds. Applicants will spend an action-packed five days and four nights at Kibblestone International Scout camp in the heart of Staffordshire participating in challenging but enjoyable daily activities that center around the fire & rescue service but also working with the police and ambulance services, where they will learn and discover new skills both for now and the future which can be applied in many future careers.
All applicants will finish the residential with a FREE certificate for the emergency first aid at work & fire extinguisher qualifications - these are what we call skills for life (usual cost for these courses would be around £250). They will also receive a comprehensive certificate detailing the activities that they have completed during the residential which will enhance their CV for future employment.
Participants will be encouraged to develop skills such as communication, problem solving, leadership, working as a team and showing dignity, respect, and inclusivity to each other.
The fun activities that they will complete during the residential include hose running, use of breathing apparatus, casualty handling, decontamination and road traffic collisions.
Our team is made up of experienced emergency services personnel with many years in the fire and rescue, ambulance, police and armed services.
Our DofE co-ordinator has ten years as a Duke of Edinburgh's Award manager, expedition supervisor, gold assessor and outdoor instructor as well as 30 years as a teacher.
Throughout the week there will be a strong focus on our environmental responsibilities, the way the emergency services face this challenge and how young people can help shape the future in this area.
Our gold residential is perfect for anyone with an interest in the fire and rescue service or other emergency services as well as anyone wanting to learn key life skills applicable for the future.
At the end of the action-packed week there will be an awards ceremony which will reward the best team (watch) and star performer.

Fire Engine Water Pump
1. Equipment inspection
All the equipment on the fire appliance will be discussed and their purpose explained to the participants in line with various health & safety regulations. Participants will then get hands-on practical experience with a range of equipment.
2. Hose reels
The participants will run out a basic hose reel (first initial tactics in the FRS, usually done multiple times a week as a firefighter) which will create a jet of water and then safely and correctly pack it away.
3. Pumps & hose running
Participants will be shown how to operate the main water pump (core skill for firefighters) at the rear of the fire appliance and then run out lengths of hoses and attach a water nozzle to produce a jet of water.
4. Emergency first aid
All participants will complete an accredited Emergency First Aid qualification (nationally recognised) which is a skills-for-life opportunity which both paramedics and first responders regularly do in their line of work. Throughout the course they will be able to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in first aid with casualties.
5. Casualty evacuation
This will require two participants to go inside a building and perform a controlled rescue of a casualty and bring them outside, they will also in a group of four use a rescue stretcher as a team activity in various challenging locations, something that all forms of uniformed services will regularly engage in.
6. Equipment assembly
A portable hydraulic system will need to be set up in the fastest time possible and in the correct order to test their listening and dexterity skills, a key skill in the fire service initial assessment.
7. Leadership & communication
Initial theory input on JESIP (https://www.jesip.org.uk/), a national occupational standard on how emergency services manage any incident which require clear, concise leadership incorporating radio communications.
8. Extinguisher training
Theory and practical safe use of a range of fire extinguishers that can be used in a workplace situation (this is certified).
9. Accident investigation
A simulated road traffic collision involving a casualty that will require a thorough investigation which is lead by our police trainer.
10. Enclosed space
Participants will be subjected to a dark and restricted space to test their ability to rescue someone from a confined space. This simulates the fire service initial assessment (any students who suffer from claustrophobia can observe only).
11. Water rescue (man-made waterway)
A still pond is used with our rescue boat to effectively retrieve a "casualty" from the water. Other water techniques including throw lines will be used. Pond is knee high with buoyancy aids also provided.
12. Responding to emergencies (voted best activity by students)
Participants will ride the fire appliances and travel in the local area being sent to various search and rescue "incidents".
13. Breathing apparatus
A thorough explanation on the correct way to wear breathing apparatus and students will then enter a smoke filled building in order to rescue a "casualty".
14. Equipment carry
Participants will carry a variety of fire-fighting equipment as a test of strength and endurance which is also part of the fire service initial tests.
15. Mental health first aid
This awareness activity concerns the recovery and resiliency of a person suffering from a mental health issue and what a person can do to get help.
16. Combination drill
This will be decided by the participants based upon previous activities.
17. Foam
This will require setting up our foam induction system using our training foam (environmentally friendly and biodegradable).
18. Ladder climb & lift
Participants will be tested as to how to safely work at height on a ladder as well as the initial set up and carrying of the ladder.
19. Hazmat & Environmental
One of the important aspects of the Fire and Rescue Service is to attend any incident that might have an adverse effect on our environment. Participants will have the opportunity to identify a number of hazardous situations and materials which will involve wearing a full chemical suit and passing on the information to the incident commander.
20. Roleplay
A practical discussion on the roles and responsibilities of the fire service, police and paramedics and the positive impact that they make. Participants will be challenged with problem solving exercises.
21. Evening activity
Participants will be split in to three teams (watches) and will be randomly selected for an emergency response in the evening to an on-site "incident".
Our residential programme is accessible and inclusive for all persons including those with moderate learning difficulties. SEND candidates are encouraged to develop team work, resilience and leadership along with all our other candidates through a wide range of fun, challenging and certified activities.
Our gold residential will be hosted at Kibblestone International Scout camp just outside Stone, Staffordshire. Additional activities are available on the site and are listed below, however time constraints will mean that only a few may be possible.
